Hollow transforms a familiar library into an abandoned, post-apocalyptic space consumed by a living alien organism, where traces of human presence linger. The project explores how environment, sound, and light can create tension between what once was and what now remains.

Hollow

Hollow is a spatial design project set within the Templeman Library at the University of Kent. The project explores themes of abandonment and the post-apocalyptic, imagining the library as a space that has been overtaken by an alien organism after human presence has disappeared. The environment is designed to feel both empty and alive, with subtle traces of past civilisation scattered throughout the space.

 

The Templeman Library was digitally modelled to allow the Blooming Blossom to be placed naturally within its context. Structural decay, collapsed walls, worn materials, and overgrown elements suggest long-term abandonment, while environmental details such as dust particles, natural and coloured lighting, and ambient sound design help create an eerie, immersive atmosphere. These elements hint that people once lived and worked in the space, but are now mysteriously absent.

 

The project was developed using Rhino 8 for modelling and Unreal Engine for environment building, materials, lighting, and sound. A combination of custom Rhino models and FAB assets was used to dress the scene and enhance realism. This project marked my first experience working with Unreal Engine and allowed me to explore real-time visualisation, storytelling through space, and atmospheredriven design.

Blooming Blossom

Blooming Blossom is a micro-spatial system designed as a functional workspace pod, inspired by the form and movement of a flower in bloom. The design centres around a series of petal-like structures that open and close, creating a dynamic, responsive environment that feels both organic and alive. Inside, a circular seating arrangement and central table support collaborative and individual work, while the enclosing petals provide a sense of privacy and focus.

The pod incorporates responsive features, such as a main petal that acts as a door, closing gradually through heat and pressure sensors, and additional petals that adjust to regulate airflow and lighting based on humidity levels. Exterior petals extend outward to form additional seating, ensuring accessibility even when the interior space is occupied.

Within the Hollow project, Blooming Blossom is reimagined as an alien “Mother Plant,” with glowing vines and organic materials transforming it into a central, living presence that appears to be slowly taking over its surroundings. This shift reinforces the project’s themes of life, decay, and environmental storytelling.
