Echo explores a future where artificial intelligence has become a primary source of companionship, reshaping social spaces into environments of isolation and private interaction. Through suspended mesh pathways, responsive cocoon-like pods, and an immersive sensory atmosphere, the project questions what happens when human connection is increasingly replaced by AI.
Echo
Echo is a speculative design project that explores a future where artificial intelligence has become a primary source of companionship, gradually replacing many forms of human interaction. Set within a reimagined library environment, the project transforms the traditional role of the library from a place of shared knowledge into a space of individualised digital connection.
Visitors navigate a network of suspended mesh pathways that weave between a series of hanging cocoon-like pods. Each pod offers a private space for interaction with an AI companion, creating moments of isolation within a larger collective environment. Responsive lighting, subtle soundscapes, and immersive atmospheric design work together to reinforce the tension between presence and loneliness. Occupied pods softly illuminate from within, while whispers, creaking walkways, and ambient hums suggest unseen activity throughout the space.
The project questions how future technologies may reshape our social behaviours and asks whether increased connectivity through artificial intelligence could ultimately lead to greater emotional isolation.
Sections and Elevations
Pod Concept
The pods act as individual spaces for interaction between the user and an AI companion. Suspended within the structure, each cocoon-like pod is formed from layers of spacer mesh woven with LED neon flex lighting, creating a soft and immersive enclosure. As a user enters, the pod gently responds to their presence, subtly sagging under their weight while internal lighting activates and begins to pulse. This responsive behaviour provides a visual indication of occupation while reinforcing the feeling that the space is aware and adaptive. Within the pod, visitors are isolated from the wider environment and encouraged to engage in private conversation with an AI presence, creating a moment of artificial companionship within an otherwise disconnected social landscape.
